The daily activities of the R&D Department are the result of tireless research and experimentation by the technologists and technicians working in our laboratory. New raw materials or processes are tested on a daily basis with the aim of constantly improving processes and maintaining the quality of the products in the range. The plant technologists support other company departments in order to guarantee that the quality standards agreed with the customer are met.
Research & Development plays a key role in Alpipan’s typical customer relationship. Customers come to us because they are looking for a reliable industrial partner capable of implementing their ideas. This is where the actual product design stage begins, with R&D offering concrete answers to the customer’s product brief. From theoretical recipe construction through prototyping and industrial testing to packaging development, the customer is accompanied along a development process aimed at launching a product on the market in the agreed timeframe and manner.
Alpipan has production lines and utilities with a high degree of automation. The company has several production lines with varying levels of flexibility and automation. It has therefore sought to achieve the ideal mix of industrial standardisation and production flexibility in order to offer its services to customers as a partner that can meet their needs both for large-scale gluten-free production and for specific projects/service products that they wish or need to produce to complete their range. Computerised and automatic systems for pre-mixing ingredients, selecting the recipe and creating and dosing the sourdough starter minimise human error in recipe preparation and eliminate the need for operators to manually handle loads. Automated end-of-line case packing and palletising enable operators to carry out a large number of ‘continuous’ process checks and guarantee our supply chain real-time knowledge of the progress of an order and therefore the availability of products for delivery. The internal traceability system using bar code readers allows the various company departments to obtain real time information and statistics in order to monitor the relevant KPIs.
Innovating does not necessarily mean doing something new. Sometimes innovation means continuing to do what you have always done, but doing it better and more efficiently. Alpipan’s special focus on innovation over the years has enabled the company to achieve important goals in terms of energy savings, increased production capacity, reduced environmental impact and constantly improved safety levels in the workplace. Use of new technologies in production, robotic handling systems and the total computerisation of workflows are the basis of the daily work of the Engineering and Information Technology departments, which guarantee that the production lines are operational 24 hours a day.
Alpipan’s production cycle is constantly monitored; technology allows even inaccessible areas of the plant, such as the positive pressure sterile cooling rooms, where there are no operators, or the baking ovens, to be kept under constant control. An efficient system of audible, visual and computer alarms allows real-time detection of any anomalies in the production facilities. The use of automated dosing systems and various types of detection devices minimises the manual intervention required by operators, increasing the level of accuracy.
